Happy 16th months! Mommy and I were realizing that a year ago, you were four months old and we were still mired in sleep troubles...and would be for some time to come. Things are going so much more smoothly now than they were then and we are very thankful for that.
What have you been up to this month? In a nutshell, talking, talking, talking. That seems to be what you spend most of your time working on. You're quite the little imitator and often parrot back what we say - either to you, to each other, or to other people. We've given up counting your words, but you have a lot of them. Some recent favorites include fork, chair, truck, bus, off!, hot cocoa, and my personal favorite, vaporizer (which sounds like pee-shy-a).
You've also started to put two and three words together on a semi-regular basis. This morning, when Mommy went in to get you, you said "Mommy, Mama sleep" - as in, Mommy, Mama's sleeping. You sometimes ask for me in the mornings and Mommy always tells you that I'm sleeping. Seems like you got the message!
You're starting to learn some fun new things like talking on the phone (fote, as you call it). You can say hi or hello (he-doh) and then you listen raptly to whoever's on the other end. Your rapt listening lasts for about 10 seconds and then you grab the phone and push the buttons like crazy and cry loudly when one of us takes it back.
We've been talking to you about the baby growing in Mommy's tummy. It's hard to know how much you understand, but you do love to point to her tummy and say "baby!" or your sister's name, which you can actually say pretty well. Even though we'd like to keep it a secret until she's born, it's quite likely that you will spill the beans before then. One of the cutest things of the past month has been when you cozy up to Mommy's tummy, lean in close, and say "hiiiii" very sweetly. It is just so sweet. We hope you'll be that sweet with her after she's born! We got you a book about being a big brother and have been reading it to you off and on.
Speaking of love affairs, you are still infatuated with Lucy, our cat. Every morning, and I do mean every morning, you wake up asking for the kitty cat (kee cat? kee cat? where?). You have started calling her Goosey Lu, which is a combination of what I call her (Lucy Goosey) and what Mommy calls her (Lucy Lu). You love to play with her and she loves to play with you. Lately, she likes to trot around the house holding one of your little socks proudly in her mouth.
Going to the park has been another favorite this month. You are always asking to go to the parky, which is your way of saying parque in espanol. We've all been lucky to have your Apa in town this past month, as he is considering a move out this way. We've seen him every few days and have all been enjoying his company. He's taken you to the park quite a few times, pushing you on the swings and playing on the slides and generally letting you run him all around.
Recently, thanks to Mommy's fabulous planning ahead, you've spent a few evenings with your buddy Rachael. She was our doula when you were born and you two have always had fun together. She remembers seeing you open up your eyes and look around when you were only partway into this world, so she might have been the first person you ever saw!
We've also gotten to see your Bubby and Poppa and your Grammy and Grandpa this month. You're always looking at their pictures on the fridge and seemed to enjoy seeing them in person. You can say Bubby and Poppa quite well and are learning to say Grammy and Grandpa. Right now, Grammy comes out sounding kind of like "bracky", which I think is the cutest and most hilarious thing ever. You actually got to spend a whole morning with Grandpa earlier this month. He took you all around the neighborhood and taught you to say coffee, among other things. We hope that was just the first in many such grandson-grandpa outings.
Oh, one more thing - sleep. Ah, the ever-present topic for discussion. Sleep is going well and continues to get incrementally better. You're taking just one nap a day and usually sleep for about an hour. Sometimes you make it to two hours and those are nice days! You nurse off to sleep for both naps and bedtime and we're all happy with it like that for now.
The best news is that you're showing an increasing ability to sleep through the night. We were wondering if it would ever happen when you suddenly reeled off about a week of sleeping straight through. We loved this! It got derailed by all of us getting sick but we hope to get back on track soon. Nights that you don't sleep through, you generally just wake up once. Not bad at all!
Mateo, Mommy and I can't believe what an amazing son we have. We love you so much that we think our hearts might explode sometimes. Every day with you is an adventure. We're so lucky to be exploring this world with you.

PS: You learned one more new thing just this morning - how to climb up onto the coffee table. I think we're in for it this month!
