Mateo's third week

At 5:27 pm today, Mateo will be three weeks old. I can't believe it's been three weeks already! And the thought of him being one month old next week just seems unbelievable. My memories of his birth are starting to seem less immediate, but still very fresh in my mind. It was such an incredible day.

In the past week, Mateo has grown and learned some new things. The most recent happened today, when he sucked his thumb for the first time! He has found his fist to suck on quite a few times accidentally, when his hand magically appeared to him in front of his face, but never managed to get the thumb in there. Today, Edlyn was holding him and handed him over to me so he could nurse and there was his thumb in his mouth. Very cool! We hope that eventually he will be able to suck his thumb when he needs comfort, instead of depending on the chupón (Spanish for pacifier) all the time.

He has also become more alert in the past week and has already won over many of our family and friends who have met him. Mateo met his great-grandpa Harold this weekend and took to him right away. He spent some contented hours snoozing in Harold's arms. He also met his Aunt Edlyn, who was quite taken with him, and he with her! She is in town for the week of Thanksgiving and Mateo and his mommies have been enjoying spending lots of time with her and my mom. He seems very comfortable with both of them and we're so glad they've gotten to spend time with him during his first weeks of life. Mateo made his first trip into the Collins Companies office on Thursday and met lots of new people. He even got his picture taken in the big conference room, since he was at his first board meeting.

Mateo now has breastfeeding mostly figured out. He's got the latching on down and eats like a champ. His only remaining puzzle to solve is my very generous letdown! As it turns out, I make tons of milk. This can be pretty overwhelming to a three-week-old baby and he often gets swamped by the amount of milk coming into his mouth. This has been frustrating for all three of us....but luckily, Good Sam (our hospital) has some great lactation consultants that have been very helpful. As well, my mom has a friend who has been very involved in La Leche League and we've benefited tremendously from her advice.

Finally, Mateo has really discovered his lungs in the past week! We read somewhere that babies sometimes become more fussy around 3 weeks and he seems to be following along with that. The kid can really project! We've developed a repetoire of things to try when he gets upset and are continuing to work towards understanding what different cries mean.

Let's see, what else. He had his first doctor's appointment last week and he had already gained back his birth weight and then some! He weighed in at 9 pounds, 4 ounces. We think he's gained more since then, as his cute cheeks are getting chubbier and even his fingers are looking a bit more rounded out. He is just the cutest little baby.

Overall, I think I speak for both of us when I say that the past three weeks have been some of the most amazing and wonderful weeks of our lives. Being pregnant was a pretty rough road for me and going through the experience of giving birth and meeting this new little boy who had been growing inside me for nine and a half months...well, words just can't describe it. And then, experiencing the beginning of his life along with him - his first hours, first night, first nursing, first diaper, first bath, first days at home - has been transformative. We love our little guy so much. Each day seems to bring something new. I'm working on enjoying each moment with him. He's already growing fast and I know they don't stay this little forever!

Sacha finished her Oral Defense!

This last week I had my oral defense for my masters thesis at WGU! The defense was actually over the phone, but it went really well. The first twenty minutes I gave my presentation of my thesis and that part felt a bit strange, because everyone was on mute, and I just talked for twenty minutes about my thesis using a power point presentation. Everyone on the call had access to my power point during the presentation.

Then, after I gave my presentation, the people on my committee could ask any question about my research fundamentals class and my instructional design class. I wasn't too worried, because I scored a 99% of my research fundamentals objective exam, and also received high marks on my practical application portion of that class. All the questions were application and real life scenarios, but I enjoyed talking about what I learned and how I bridge theory into practice with research and instructional design.

One of the strange things about graduation this quickly after receiving my teaching credential, not to mention Mateo, is that it seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle. Understandably, Mateo is more interesting than my receiving my masters. I'm thinking that I'll wait till the ceremony, when Mateo is a bit older, to really celebrate my accomplishment. I fell like it is a huge accomplishment, and I can't believe that I wrote a 140 page paper with multiple pages worth of references! I wouldn't have believed that I could do that before I started this program.

The graduation is in February or January and I am looking forward to bringing Mateo and Alayna to the graduation and to meeting all the mentors and people I have studied with, but have only known online!

Su Primer Cuento

I've been reading to Mateo every day. This is one of his first books: Siempre te querré. I've been trying to read to him in Spanish. It's good practice for me to be reading in Spanish every day, and that way he is getting exposed to the language. As much as possible, I am also talking to him in Spanish.

Here are some of the phrases I have been using, along with their English translations.

Are you cold? Tienes frió?
Are you hungry? Tienes hambre? O Quieres comer?
Are you ready for another meal? ¿Estás listo para comer?
Did you sleep well? Dormiste bien?
Did you go pee? Hiciste chichi?
Did you go poop? Hiciste popo?
Do you have to burp? Tienes que eructar?
Do you have to go pee? Tienes que hacer chichi?
Do you have to go poop? Tienes que hacer popo?
Do you want the boob? Quieres la teta?
Do you want to be swaddled? Quieres que te cubra?
Do you want to sleep? Quieres dormir?
Look at that cute ____. Mira esa/as/o/os tan lindos. Ej, Mira esos ojitos tan bellos. Mira esa naris tan Linda.
Mama loves you very much Mami te quiere mucho. O Mami te ama. O Mami te adora.
O, goodness gracious. Ay, Dios mío.
O, you don’t like that, do you. O, no te gusta eso verdad.
That takes a lot of energy. Eso toma mucha energía.
That took a lot of energy. Eso tomo mucha energía!
What a big burp. Qué eructo tan grande!
You are a very hungry caterpillar. Eres una oruga muy hambriento.
You are going to feel better after you are swaddled. Te vas a sentir mejor después de que te tape.
You are so cute! Eres tan mono!
You burped! Ay, eructaste
You want your binki? Quieres tu chupón?

My little mouse. Mi ratoncito.
How beautiful you are Que cosa tan mas Linda.
My little one so beautiful, so pretty, and so full of love. Mi ninito tan bonita, tan chulito, tan lleno de amor.

A Week Home from the Hospital . . .

We got home from the hospital a week ago today. Seems hard to believe that a week has passed since then, and that we actually have a baby son! Things have started to go much better in the past few days. Mateo is sleeping for longer and nursing is going better. We've really been enjoying having my mom here for the past week. She has been wonderful with the baby and teaching us all kinds of things about how to take care of him. She has also single-handedly organized our house and gotten us current on lots of things we need. We'll be sad to see her go. Sacha's mom is coming for a week starting on Friday and we're looking forward to that, too.

It has just been wonderful having the baby here. I have been loving seeing Sacha with him. She's so good with him and so proud to be his mom and I feel so lucky to be doing all this with her. She's supportive and patient and loving and seems like a natural with him. She was amazing during labor and has taken on all the new responsibilities of parenthood like she's been doing it all her life.

On top of that, the baby is just such a fun little guy. He's mellow and gentle and seems curious about the world around him - at least what he can see from 8 to 12 inches away! He's a good eater and seems strong for his age. He gulps down lots of milk and is learning to latch on better and better all the time. Even in the middle of the night, we love having him here with us and can't believe our luck that we have such a fabulous baby son. We'll add some more photos soon, as soon as we manage to upload them from the camera.

Adoption papers signed

We signed adoption papers today and Alayna had a lactation consultation! Nursing is really painful for her, and hopefully some of the techniques will start to make things better. The consultant also looked at our breast pump, and it turns out that one of the parts wasn't properly sterilized. I didn't realize that it could come apart, and so I hadn't been disinfecting it properly:( So, we are throwing out all of the milk that Alayna has worked hard to pump. But . . . I would rather throw out the milk than give it to him and have it be bad. And now we know the right way of sterilizing the pump, so I'm glad we went to the consultation!

The New and Expanded Family

Mateo makes his appearance

On October 31, 2006, or Halloween night, Mateo entered this world at 5:27. Alayna was induced after 41 weeks of pregnancy around 3am on October 31st, and started labor in the morning. After a ten hour labor, and 27 minutes of pushing, he joined us in the world, alert and with full use of his vocal chords! He is doing wonderfully and enjoys looking at the faces of his moms, grandparents and his great-grandma.

He is sweet, gentle and curious about the world around him. Here are some photos of his first few days.
