Cellist

When we were in California this past summer, we spent an afternoon visiting one of my mom's childhood friends. They were close friends while growing up in the northwest and then amazingly ended up living in the same town as adults. This friend and her husband had kids much later than my parents did, so they are just in high school and college now. Anyway, they always invite us over when we visit because they know how much we (and the kids) love to admire the flock of chickens they keep in the backyard!

However, my mom's friend just happens to work in the field of classical music and she and her children are all accomplished musicians. What does she play, you ask? Well, the cello. Mateo's most favorite of all the instruments, excepting possibly the guitar. He used to bring it up frequently when he was into introducing us all as various members of a quartet.

And, it just so happened that my mom's friend had recently decided to start playing the cello again after a long hiatus and so had a cello just lying around. Which she let Mateo play. I wish we had had a video camera, because he was absolutely over the moon with excitement...and did manage to make some sounds with the bow on the strings. It was pretty funny and cute - this two-year-old trying to play a full-sized adult cello with a whole crowd of adults gathered around oohing and ahhing.

I bring this up because my mom just sent me a photo and it brought back the memory of that afternoon. Here's our little budding cellist:
